Seeking Volunteers for New Council Committees

9/30/2024

Picture
Over the past several months, the Northshore Council PTSA Board of Directors has discussed the most effective way to restructure some of our positions in order to more effectively meet our goals. Over the years, we have realized that the scope of desired work in those positions was too big for one person. The board felt that the work encompassed by these positions would be best served by a committee, inviting multiple voices to join together in support of our local PTAs. At our September 16th membership meeting, two new committees were established. The two new committees are Outreach and Inclusion, with the chair from each committee being a voting member of our Council Board of Directors.
The goal of our Outreach committee is to build practices that more effectively extend Council’s support to the PTAs in Northshore School District in helping them connect with their communities. You can read a draft of the committee's objectives HERE. This is a working document and will change at the discretion of the committee members.

The goal of the Inclusion committee is to focus on how a PTA can look at their internal practices through a lens that includes historically marginalized and underrepresented populations, including people of different races, ethnicities, religions, abilities, genders, sexual orientations and socioeconomic barriers. With the creation of this new committee, the work that both our former DEI chair and Special Education Representative Chair positions focused on will not go away but will instead move under this broader committee so that a concentrated effort could be made to reach more groups in our district. You can read a draft of this committee's objectives HERE. This is a working document and will change at the discretion of the committee members.

Since the September meeting adjourned, members of Council have received feedback about the naming of the Inclusion Committee. We are taking this feedback seriously and are open to suggestions for a name that better fits the goals of this committee without any marginalized group feeling excluded. Please take a moment to share your ideas on the naming of this new committee by filling out our feedback form. As a membership organization, our local PTA voting delegates always have the opportunity to modify our Standing Rules, including the names of committees, at a membership meeting.

Our Council agrees that perception of words is important. Diversity and Equity as well as the Inclusion of all races, ethnicities, religions, abilities, genders, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic groups are important to us, our PTAs, in NSD, and in the world. We need volunteers from the community to be a part of these two committees and to keep us accountable for following through with the work we want each committee to achieve. If you are interested in volunteering for any of our committees, please fill out our interest form.

We are excited about the expanded work that these committees could accomplish. With your help and partnership, we can do great things!

Remittance of Northshore Council PTSA Fees

9/21/2024

Picture
With the change to the Givebacks membership platform, fees due to Councils by local PTAs will no longer be paid to Councils automatically.

Northshore Council PTSA charges a $1.50 fee per member. This fee goes to covering the costs incurred by Council in supporting our 34 local PTAs throughout the year. Northshore Council also charges a $100 Annual Program Fee to support our Educational Speakers and Community Events Grant program and a donation to the WSPTA Scholarship fund.
Northshore Council PTSA has decided to invoice our local PTAs three times during the year on November 1st, February 1st and June 1st with payment being due by the 15th of those months in a manner chosen by the PTA.

Please see the PDF below for details regarding payment of council fees!

If you have any questions, please reach out to Brenae Brix, our Council Treasurer at [email protected].

WSPTA Urges Members to Vote No on I-2109 & I-2117

9/20/2024

WSPTA urges our over 84,000 members to vote no on I-2109 and I-2117.
WSPTA members have long supported ample funding for schools, promoted safe and healthy environments for living and learning, and advocated for mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change, which pose a direct threat to the health and well-being of our children and youth.

Based on positions previously adopted by members, the WSPTA Board of Directors has voted to oppose Initiatives 2109 and 2117. If these initiatives pass, our children and youth will be impacted, as school districts will lose billions of dollars in funding and access to federal matching funds.

About Legislative Assembly:
The Washington State PTA legislative platform is a two-year platform to mirror the Washington state legislative cycle. On the even-numbered years, the new platform is voted on by members at the legislative assembly in the fall. The top five issues become our short-term platform and consist of our priority issues when advocating throughout the year. Other issues are placed on an “also supported” list. Learn about WSPTA's current legislative priorities and other supported issues by clicking here.

It will be an incredible weekend of advocacy, education, and networking, and of course, the important work of debating and voting on additions and updates to our legislative platform. This is an amazing opportunity to connect with PTA members and advocates statewide.

Planning Your First Membership Meeting

9/3/2024

The new school year is upon us and the PTA year is about to get into full swing! Now is the time to plan your first general membership meeting of the year!
Picture
While some PTAs may be planning for in-person meetings, some are planning to meet online, which may require a little additional preparation.
If you are new to hosting virtual meetings or hybrid meetings, get to know your virtual meeting tool’s online support – there should be tips for setup for all the features, including screen sharing, enabling closed captioning, and login requirements.

TIP: Host one or more practice meetings with a few board members ahead of time to get accustomed to the online meeting tools and platform you'll be using.
Whether your PTA meets virtually or in-person, the same items of business must be done.
  1. Approve the 2024-2025 budget – Even if your membership approved a 2024-2025 budget in the spring, adjustments may need to be made. The board of directors should review the approved budget before the meeting and make recommendations to the membership for any necessary changes. Even if there are no recommendations by the board, the budget must be reapproved by membership.
  2. Present and approve your mission statement and goals - A mission statement is a concise summary of an PTA's purpose, goals, and the methods to achieve them. To ensure your PTA's budget and programs align with your mission, it's important to review it annually with your board members and present it to the membership for approval.
  3. Approve the standing rules – Standing rules are the set of conditions the members impose on the running of the PTA, and they must be approved annually. They should be reviewed by the board prior to the meeting to ensure they are up to date with all requirements. The Leadership Guides section of the WSPTA website has standing rules templates. There were MANY updates to the WSPTA Uniform Bylaws this past spring that will impact your local PTA!  Read more on WSPTA’s blog.
  4. Present the 2023-2024 financial review – Results of the end of year financial review should be presented to the members of your PTA. The annual Financial Review is a requirement of the PTA/PTSA’s insurance. It is also a helpful tool meant to assist the Treasurer and the rest of the Board of Directors in establishing and refining best practices. During a Financial Review, the policies and procedures are being reviewed, and the committee’s feedback is important in providing insight to those policies.
  5. Hold elections – If you have vacant positions, you'll want to hold elections. Washington state nonprofit laws require a President, Secretary, and Treasurer to be elected by the members. Check if your standing rules include other positions that must be elected. Some PTAs may not have elected a complete slate of officers in the Spring. If your PTA falls into this category, you will need to take several steps to make sure you can hold a legal election by virtual meeting. View Council’s Voting Policy as an example.
  6. Elect a nominating committee – This is required by the WSPTA Uniform Bylaws and is part of the WSPTA Standards of Affiliation. A nominating committee elected in 2024-2025 is tasked with presenting the slate of 2025-2026 candidates. Three members must be elected to a nominating committee at least 30 days prior to the election. Electing this committee early in the year means that they have all year to do the work, you are asking for volunteers at one of the best-attended meetings of the year (hopefully, before people are over-committed), and if you are unable to get three nominees at this meeting you will have additional meetings at which you can continue to work to get three nominees.
  7. Select delegates to attend WSPTA’s Legislative Assembly. – PTA delegates from all over Washington meet to discuss, debate, and vote on new issues and resolutions, including the adoption of WSPTA’s 2024-2026 Legislative Platform and Top Five Issues. Check your PTA's standing rules to see the guidelines and priority order for selecting delegates. This may include the number of delegates allowed and any specific positions (e.g., advocacy chair, president, etc.) that have priority to attend. Confirm in your budget how much is allocated to attend Legislative Assembly.

Bonus Tip: Plan on having something additional to offer your members once the business is complete. The first meeting is a great opportunity for your principal to give an update on the start of the year. Plan ahead with your principal and make sure you know what format for taking questions they are comfortable with. During the meeting, act as the moderator by setting ground rules and expectations for how members will participate and ask their questions.

Welcome Letter from Council President 2024-2025

9/2/2024

Picture
The 2024-2025 school year is underway and Northshore Council PTSA leaders are looking forward to another amazing year of PTA!
We would like to start this year off by introducing you to Council’s President: Grace Jurado.

Over the past five years, we have seen Northshore PTAs continually adapt to unforeseen challenges, changing the ways we can fulfill our missions. Council leaders continue to be impressed and inspired with the way we have seen our local PTAs adapt, come up with new ideas and build stronger PTAs and communities. This year presents a new set of challenges as we all learn to master a new membership database and as our schools reel from budget cuts, creating more requests from PTAs. One thing we on Northshore Council know is that our local PTAs are masters at being #PTAFlexible and we will continue to strengthen our connections with our communities and with each other.

We also know that no one has all the answers, nor is there only one way to do things. For this reason, we want to let you know that Council is always here for you. Our mission as your Northshore PTSA Council is to support the work you do at the local PTA level. Our Board of Directors consists of PTA leaders with a wealth of experience at schools across the Northshore School District with a variety of PTA experience at the local, council, regional and state level. As such, we have many resources that can help you navigate the day-to-day PTA work, as well as the unexpected, including:
  • A Facebook group for Northshore PTA leaders as well as a group specific to Presidents to make connections and ask questions;
  • Office Hours & Roundtables so that we can share and learn from one another;
  • A newsletter, website, Facebook, and Instagram to help keep you informed;
  • Trainings so you can learn how to run your non-profit and become a stronger PTA leader;
  • Meetings to share information and connect you with district and community leaders;
  • Grants to support your PTA’s next educational speaker or community event; and, of course;
  • Personalized, one-on-one support - we’re just an email or zoom meeting away!

Our 2024-2025 Council team is ready to help you continue to do amazing things for our students, families, schools, and communities.

Wishing you a fantastic school year!
Grace Jurado

A little bit about Grace:
Grace Jurado has three kids: a freshman and senior in college and a junior at Inglemoor High School. She started her PTA journey with visions of a playground garbage can and a costume sharing program at her kids' elementary school and her PTA involvement has only grown ever since.  Grace has held positions in all of her schools' PTA boards and has also served on Northshore Council PTSA for a decade. She is excited to support PTAs as Council President this year. Council is Grace's favorite level of PTA service, and she has an amazing team of PTA leaders on the board to serve with this year.
