Seeking Volunteers for New Council Committees

9/30/2024

Picture
Over the past several months, the Northshore Council PTSA Board of Directors has discussed the most effective way to restructure some of our positions in order to more effectively meet our goals. Over the years, we have realized that the scope of desired work in those positions was too big for one person. The board felt that the work encompassed by these positions would be best served by a committee, inviting multiple voices to join together in support of our local PTAs. At our September 16th membership meeting, two new committees were established. The two new committees are Outreach and Inclusion, with the chair from each committee being a voting member of our Council Board of Directors.
The goal of our Outreach committee is to build practices that more effectively extend Council’s support to the PTAs in Northshore School District in helping them connect with their communities. You can read a draft of the committee's objectives HERE. This is a working document and will change at the discretion of the committee members.

The goal of the Inclusion committee is to focus on how a PTA can look at their internal practices through a lens that includes historically marginalized and underrepresented populations, including people of different races, ethnicities, religions, abilities, genders, sexual orientations and socioeconomic barriers. With the creation of this new committee, the work that both our former DEI chair and Special Education Representative Chair positions focused on will not go away but will instead move under this broader committee so that a concentrated effort could be made to reach more groups in our district. You can read a draft of this committee's objectives HERE. This is a working document and will change at the discretion of the committee members.

Since the September meeting adjourned, members of Council have received feedback about the naming of the Inclusion Committee. We are taking this feedback seriously and are open to suggestions for a name that better fits the goals of this committee without any marginalized group feeling excluded. Please take a moment to share your ideas on the naming of this new committee by filling out our feedback form. As a membership organization, our local PTA voting delegates always have the opportunity to modify our Standing Rules, including the names of committees, at a membership meeting.

Our Council agrees that perception of words is important. Diversity and Equity as well as the Inclusion of all races, ethnicities, religions, abilities, genders, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic groups are important to us, our PTAs, in NSD, and in the world. We need volunteers from the community to be a part of these two committees and to keep us accountable for following through with the work we want each committee to achieve. If you are interested in volunteering for any of our committees, please fill out our interest form.

We are excited about the expanded work that these committees could accomplish. With your help and partnership, we can do great things!
