Join gender education specialist Aidan Key with Gender Diversity in examining the topic of gender diversity in children and teens, the challenges faced by these children youth and their families, exploring current research and identifying the best approaches for creating inclusive, supportive environments for these children.
In our TWO PART WEBINAR, Aidan Key will address several key objectives (as well as several more):
- Increasing familiarity with terminology and concepts related to gender diversity, specifically transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary youth by establishing a framework of gender and core gender terminology.
- A comprehensive delineation of gender identity and gender expression as it relates to, and is distinctive from, biological sex and sexual orientation.
- Overview of gender diverse children in today’s society as well as past perspectives.
- Barriers to understanding and myths associated with gender diverse populations.
- Understanding the experiences of gender diverse youth and their families.
- Increased confidence and tools for having age-appropriate conversations about gender diversity with children of all ages.
- How to best support gender diverse students and their families.
Kids have questions. Adults have questions. We can get them answered in Session 2! NOW IS THE TIME to get clarity from a reliable source.
Questions may arise like these:
- How can a child be transgender or gender diverse?
- Aren’t they too young to know?
- Shouldn't they wait until puberty?
- What if this is a phase? They seem pretty confused. Are they just trying to get attention?
- Is it alright to talk with children about this and what is age-appropriate?
- How is this different from being gay?
- I hardly know what it means to be transgender, what do they mean by genderqueer, pansexual, asexual, non-binary, and gender fluid?
- What about bathrooms, locker rooms, overnight trips, sports and other gender-segregated spaces?
- How do I handle teasing or bullying?
If you already have questions, please include them in your registration so the presenters can prepare in advance.

- Each PTA needs two insurance documents by December 1st on file with the district

Council Business: The minutes from the September 2021 meeting were approved as written. Council's AIM insurance for the year was renewed and paid for in October. The mid year financial review committee was appointed while the election for the Nominating Committee was postponed until the next membership meeting.
Guest Speakers:
- Dr. Michelle Reid, Northshore School District Superintendent, presented information on the bond and levies coming up during the special election in February 2022. She discussed that we had the lowest drop in enrollment in the state from Covid. However, we still rely on and need the bond and levy money to fund many of our programs. She also mentioned that the bonds and levies are not looking for new taxes, they are renewed taxes that already exist. Finally, she shared that the presentation is available to share at other PTA meetings.
- Sue Freeman came and shared information about Northshore Nourishing Network, an organization that has been around for 11 years. Visit their website to find information about local food banks as well as other programs to help families in need. Council also keeps a list of food banks hosted at our local schools. If your school/PTA has a food bank that you would like added to this list please email us. If you would like information on setting up a food bank at your school, contact Melissa Kline.
- Darin Hanson and Salim Mohammed from Maywood Hills PTA shared their new and successful approach to membership. This year, membership was paid for by their PTA for anyone who opted in via a simple two step process on their website. With this shift in their membership campaign they are able to focus more efforts on volunteering, events, and engaging with their members & school community.
Council Reports:
- F.A.C.E (Family and Community Engagement): Claudine Miller discussed strategies for engaging with your school by surveying your school's teachers and admins to find out the top three needs and/or top three wishes for this year.

- A recap of the 2021 Legislative Assembly which included an update on approved resolutions and amendments to existing resolutions as well as our Top 5 priorities. They also noted that one primary focus for Advocacy right now is more nurses and mental health professionals in the schools.
- Mental Health Committee: Melissa Kline and Pauline Wray shared that the Mental Health Committee will be hosting a Parent Education event on Wednesday, November 17th at 1pm titled "Identifying and Addressing Youth Anxiety with Kendra Read, PhD". Click here to view a recording of this presentation. We also would like to recognize that November is Native American Heritage Month and as part of PTA's mission of inclusivity, we honor and stand with our Native American neighbors. We hope that as you spend time with friends and family this holiday weekend giving thanks, that you will also take time to support Indigenous American communities.
Support Indigenous American Communities Colonization and structural racism are foundational to many issues Indigenous communities face. While we can't undo the harm that has been inflicted, we can begin (and hopefully continue) thinking of ways to support and stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. This can look like expanding our knowledge, supporting local communities in the towns we live in, or purchasing items from Indigenous owned businesses. |

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns youth face. While it is a normal emotional experience, it can grow to become incredibly distressing and interfering, particularly during a global pandemic. When anxiety is present, caregivers (parents, educators, family members) have an important role in helping youth identify anxiety, and encouraging and reinforcing brave vs. anxious behavior. Kendra Read, PhD, a clinical psychologist and assistant professor in the UW School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will discuss how to identify, understand and begin to intervene in cases of problematic anxiety for the youth in your lives.
BIO: Kendra Read, PhD is a clinical psychologist, the Director of the Mood & Anxiety Program and Director of Anxiety Programs at Seattle Children’s. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA under the mentorship of Philip Kendall, Ph.D., and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Department. Dr. Read specializes in the treatment of youth with anxiety disorders and OCD from a cognitive behavioral therapy perspective. Her research interests include understanding factors that contribute to treatment outcome, and the dissemination and implementation of CBT for anxiety disorders.
This event is brought to you by the Northshore Council Mental Health Committee.
