Summer Membership Planning Ideas

5/17/2021

Thank you to all our membership chairs for all your efforts this year. I know we all need a break, but I wanted to share some ideas for a successful back to school membership campaign. In order to have a successful fall membership drive, some summer planning is needed.

If you have questions or need additional support, please email me at membership@northshorecouncilptsa.org.

Ideas and Tips for Planning Your 2021-2022 Membership Campaign
  • Make sure your communications person has the latest email list. Example: Middle School PTA’s should connect with the families of 5th graders from their feeder schools now to start including them in communications. Not sure how? Contact Council.
  • Get on the agenda at your summer board retreat (Membership is EVERYONES job). You can share your membership campaign ideas and solicit feedback from your board.
  • Connect with families this summer. This can be a simple as posting on social media weekly or sending a summer newsletter in August to let families know how you will welcome them back to school.
  • Plan your fall membership campaign for families and school staff.
  • Is your President attending the first staff meeting in August?  If yes, ask them to talk about membership. One idea is to hand out membership forms along with a small staff appreciation gift.
  • How will families know your school has a PTA?  Consider hanging a membership banner on your fence or putting a PTA yard sign in front of the school.
  • Your PTA, including your membership chair, should attend any welcome back to school events, if allowed by your principal. Have flyers on hand that promote your PTA and highlight the ways your support your school and community.
  • Create your membership form for families and consider a smaller form for staff. Having your form translated into another language can increase your reach as it makes it more accessible to members of your community. Check with your school principal to find out the most common languages spoken within your school community.
  • Make sure you have a way to JOIN online - How to join should be EASY to find on your website and social media. Consider making it your website front page for August/September.

Remember: MEMBERSHIP is everyone’s job! Communicate your membership campaign plan to your board so they can work with you as some of these ideas you may need other volunteers support or help.
